Mastering Parallel Parking: A Simple Guide That Actually Works

Ask almost any learner driver what part of the practical driving test makes their hands sweat, and you will get the same answer almost every time: reverse parallel parking.

It has earned a reputation as the single most intimidating maneuver on the Service NSW practical exam. Between judging reference points, steering in reverse, and worrying about hitting the kerb, it is easy to feel overwhelmed.

Here is the secret: parallel parking is not about luck—it is pure geometry and timing. Once you know the exact visual reference points to look for, you can park smoothly and accurately every single time.

Here is a straightforward, battle-tested 5-step method that takes the guesswork out of reverse parallel parking.

The Golden Rules Before You Begin

Before putting the car in reverse, keep these three fundamentals in mind:

  1. Slow Speed, Fast Hands: Keep your vehicle moving at a slow crawl using light brake control while turning your steering wheel briskly.

  2. Observation is Key: You must perform 360-degree visual scanning before and during the maneuver—including blind-spot head checks over both shoulders.

  3. Adjustment is Allowed: On your NSW practical test, touching a kerb lightly or taking one forward-and-back correction to straighten up is completely acceptable! Mounting the kerb or hitting the car behind, however, is a test fail item.

Step-by-Step: The 5-Step Parallel Park Formula

│  1. Line up side-by-side (1-meter gap, rear bumpers aligned)│

Step 1: Set Up Your Starting Position

  • Signal: Indicate left for at least 5 seconds before stopping next to the target vehicle.

  • Positioning: Pull up parallel to the vehicle parked in front of your target space, leaving about 1 meter (arm’s length) of space between your car and theirs.

  • Reference Point: Align your rear bumper with their rear bumper (or line up side mirrors if both vehicles are a similar size). Shift into Reverse.

Step 2: The First Turn (Full Lock Left)

  • Check Surroundings: Perform a full 360-degree observation check (check mirrors, look over your shoulders, and ensure no traffic or pedestrians are approaching).

  • Action: While slowly crawling backward, turn your steering wheel all the way to the left (full lock left).

  • Reference Point: Reverse slowly until your car is at a 45-degree angle to the kerb.💡 Visual Cue: Look in your right side mirror. When you can see the front bumper and headlight of the car behind you in your right mirror, stop!

Step 3: The Straight Reverse

  • Action: Straighten your steering wheel (turn it 1.5 rotations back to center).

  • Action: Slowly reverse straight back along that 45-degree angle.

  • Reference Point: Keep reversing until your front bumper clears the rear bumper of the car in front of you.💡 Visual Cue: Look over your left shoulder or at your left side mirror—stop when your left side mirror covers the taillight of the vehicle in front.

Step 4: The Second Turn (Full Lock Right)

  • Check Blind Spots: Quickly check over your right shoulder for passing cyclists or overtaking traffic.

  • Action: While crawling backward at a slow speed, turn your steering wheel all the way to the right (full lock right).

  • Outcome: Your front end will swing smoothly into the parking space while the rear of your car glides toward the kerb.

Step 5: Straighten and Secure

  • Action: Once your car is parallel to the kerb, straighten your wheels.

  • Positioning: Shift into Drive and move forward slightly to center your vehicle between the car in front and behind. You should finish within 1 to 2 meters of the car in front and within 50 cm of the kerb.

  • Secure: Apply the handbrake and select Park.

3 Common Parallel Parking Mistakes (And Fixes)

Problem

What Caused It

The Quick Fix

Too Far From the Kerb

You turned the wheel right too early or didn't reverse far enough back at the 45-degree angle.

Drive forward, re-align at Step 1, and make sure your 45-degree angle goes deeper toward the kerb.

Hitting/Mounting the Kerb

You started too close to the front vehicle or reversed back too far before lock-right.

Stop immediately before mounting the kerb. Shift into Drive, steer left, and pull forward to adjust.

Turning Too Late

Moving the steering wheel too slowly while the car was rolling too fast.

Use light foot-brake pressure to keep your speed at a slow crawl so your hands can keep up.
