Overseas Licence Conversion in NSW
Seamlessly Transition to an Australian Driver’s Licence
Converting an international licence can be complex, especially with recent 2026 regulatory updates. At L Driving School, we specialize in driving test preparation to ensure you pass your NSW assessment on the first attempt.
What You Need to Know
1. Mandatory Conversion Periods
- Permanent Residents: You must convert your overseas licence to a NSW licence within 3 months of arrival.
- Temporary Visa Holders (Students/Workers): As of recent reforms, you must convert within 6 months of residing in NSW to continue driving legally.
2. The 2026 Rule Change (Crucial Update)
As of 1 February 2026, "Experienced Driver Recognition" has changed. Many drivers from List B countries (such as South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Africa) who were previously exempt from testing if over age 25 now must pass both the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and the Practical Driving Test.
Why L Driving School is the Best Choice for Your Conversion
Navigating Sydney’s roads is different from driving overseas. We don't just teach you how to drive; we teach you how to pass the NSW examiner's criteria.
- Mock Driving Test Specialist: We conduct realistic mock tests that mirror the actual Service NSW assessment. We grade you on the same criteria used by examiners, identifying "fail items" before they happen in the real test.
- Test Route Familiarity: Every Service NSW centre has specific test routes. Our instructors know the local test route quirks—from tricky school zones to complex intersections—and will give you the "home ground advantage."
- Expert Driving Test Preparation: We focus on the "Australian way," correcting habits like "palming" the steering wheel or improper shoulder checks that often lead to instant failure for experienced overseas drivers.
- Multilingual & Patient Instructors: We understand the stress of moving to a new country and provide a calm, supportive environment.
The Conversion Process
Step 1: Identify Your Licence Category
- Recognised (List A): Countries like UK, USA, NZ, and Japan. Usually exempt from tests.
- Non-Recognised / List B: Includes China, India, Pakistan, Philippines, and (as of 2026) previous List B countries for all ages. You will likely need to pass a Knowledge and Practical test.
Step 2: Book Your Mock Test
Don’t go into the official test blind. Book a Driving Test Preparation session with us to run through the test route and ensure your skills meet NSW standards.
Step 3: Visit Service NSW
You will need:
- Your proof of identity.
- Your current overseas licence (with an English translation if required).
- To pass an eyesight test.
- To pay the relevant licensing fees.
