NSW Driving Test Checklist: Everything You Need to Pass Your First Time

The day of your driving test can be a mix of excitement and nerves. At L Driving, we’ve seen hundreds of students successfully transition from learners to P-platers. The secret to success isn't just great driving—it's arriving prepared.

Use this checklist to ensure you don't have any "unexpected fails" before you even start the engine.

1. Essential Documentation

Before the examiner even sits in the car, they need to verify who you are and that you’ve done the work.

  • Current Learner Licence: Make sure it’s in your wallet and not expired!
  • Logbook Completion:
    • Paper Logbook: Ensure all 120 hours (including 20 hours of night driving) are signed off and the "Declaration of Completion" is signed by both you and your supervisor.
    • Digital Apps: If you use an app, ensure you have submitted your hours at least 48 hours before your test.

  • Overseas Licence Holders: Bring your original overseas licence and a NAATI-certified translation if it’s not in English.

  • Eyesight: If your licence has a "Condition S" (glasses/contacts), ensure you are wearing them.

2. Your Vehicle: The "Roadworthy" Check

If your car isn’t up to standard, the examiner can cancel the test immediately. At L Driving, we use a modern 2025 Toyota Corolla to ensure everything is in perfect working order, but if you use your own car, check these:

  • Cleanliness: A clean car shows the examiner you are a responsible driver. Clear out any loose trash from the floor or dashboard.

  • Working Lights: Check your indicators, brake lights, and headlights (both low and high beam).

  • Tyres: Ensure they have legal tread depth and no visible damage or "bulges."
  • L-Plates: You must have clean, clearly visible L-plates displayed on the front and back of the exterior (not inside the windows).
  • Windscreen: No cracks in the driver's line of sight, and your wipers/demisters must work perfectly.

3. The "Pre-Drive" Control Check

The examiner will ask you to demonstrate several controls before you leave the Service NSW car park. Know how to operate:

  • [ ] Handbrake
  • [ ] Horn
  • [ ] Windscreen Wipers & Washers
  • [ ] Front & Rear Demisters
  • [ ] Hazard Lights

4. On-Road Performance: The "Big Three"

To pass with flying colors, focus on these three habits that examiners watch closely:

  1. Exaggerated Head Checks: Don't just move your eyes. Turn your head clearly to check your blind spots before pulling out, merging, or changing lanes.
  2. Full Stops at Stop Signs: "Rolling stops" are an immediate fail. Come to a complete halt, count to three, then proceed when safe.

  1. Speed Management: Stay 2-3km/h under the limit. Remember, School Zones are strictly 40km/h and can be active during your test time!

Pro-Tip for Parramatta & Western Sydney Learners

Most learners from the Pendle Hill area will take their test at the Silverwater or Blacktown Service NSW centers. These areas are known for complex roundabouts and busy school zones.
