Top 5 Trickiest Intersections in Ryde and How to Navigate Them

If you’re preparing for your driving test at the Ryde Service NSW (Macquarie Park), you already know the area is a mix of high-speed multi-lane roads and complex residential roundabouts. One wrong lane choice or a hesitant merge can be the difference between a pass and a "try again."

To help you stay calm, we’ve mapped out the five toughest spots in Ryde and our expert tips for acing them in 2026.

1. The "Top Ryde" Intersection (Devlin St & Blaxland Rd)

This is the heart of Ryde and one of the busiest junctions in Northern Sydney.

  • The Challenge: Multiple lanes, high traffic volume from the shopping centre, and very short phasing on some turn signals.
  • How to Navigate: Plan your lane early. If you’re coming from Devlin St and need to turn into the shopping centre or Blaxland Rd, get into your turning lane at least 200m before the lights. Avoid last-minute "lane hopping," which is a common reason for test failures.

2. Lane Cove Rd & Victoria Rd (The Gateway)

Two of Sydney’s biggest arterial roads meet here, creating a high-pressure environment for learners.

  • The Challenge: High speeds (60-70km/h) and constant heavy vehicle traffic. It’s easy to feel intimidated by the large trucks and buses.
  • How to Navigate: Maintain your buffer zone. In a 2025 Toyota Corolla (like the ones we use at L Driving), you have great visibility, but you still need to give yourself space. If you're turning right, ensure you don't "creep" too far into the intersection and block the box.

3. The Waterloo Rd & Herring Rd Roundabouts

Located near Macquarie University, these roundabouts are famous for being "confusing."

  • The Challenge: These are multi-lane roundabouts. Many learners fail here because they enter in the wrong lane or fail to signal correctly when exiting.
  • How to Navigate: Remember the golden rule: Left lane for left and straight, Right lane for right and U-turns (unless marked otherwise). Always give a left-turn signal after you pass the exit before the one you want.

4. Victoria Rd, Station St & Chatham Rd (West Ryde)

As of early 2026, this intersection has seen new traffic safety upgrades, including new red arrow sequences.

  • The Challenge: New pedestrian safety rules mean you might be held on a red arrow longer than you expect, even if the road looks clear.
  • How to Navigate: Patience is key. Do not try to "beat the arrow." Watch for the new red arrow signals specifically designed to protect pedestrians. A "fail to give way" to a pedestrian here is an immediate test fail.

5. Epping Rd & Balaclava Rd (The High-Speed Merge)

This is where many test routes transition from residential streets to major highways.

  • The Challenge: Merging from the 50km/h Balaclava Rd onto the 80km/h Epping Rd.

  • How to Navigate: Use the full length of the acceleration lane. You need to reach the speed of traffic before you merge. Check your blind spot twice—once to see if it’s clear, and a second time right as you move.
